Respiratory infection (RI) is one of the most common serious illnesses keepers face, and one of the most preventable: the overwhelming majority of cases trace to a husbandry failure — usually temperatures that were too cool, too long, often combined with chronic over-humidity and poor airflow.

Recognizing it early

The early signs are easy to miss and easy to dismiss: a faint clicking or popping with each breath, slight bubbling at the nares, more frequent yawning or gaping, and a subtle shift to holding the head and neck elevated to ease breathing. Catching it here, before open-mouth breathing and mucus appear, changes the whole prognosis…
